Leila and her twin sister Dilan were born in 1988 and were raised by their father, Fahir Kinali, initially in Gaziantep, Turkey. Very early on in their childhood, they relocated to Ashford, Sussex, England, where they lived until their early adolescence, wherein they moved to Boston, and attended high school there together. However, Leila's very sharp intellect and capacity for knowledge saw her skipping ahead a grade, and then later leaving high school at the beginning of Junior year to attend Curry College for her Bachelor's in Education. During this time Leila spent her summers being a camp counselor, taking up the guitar so as to lead the campfire songs. Since then she's kept up practice nearly religiously (it helps her relax and unwind).
From there Leila looked abroad to seek higher education—she received her M.A. in Librarianship from University of Sheffield in the U.K. It was tough, being so far away from her family (especially her sister), but she coped by establishing a strict schedule of Skype calling. To this day she maintains her communication regimen with her father, from weekly phone calls to monthly dinners. That's not to say she's not spontaneous—she merely doesn't get much opportunity for spontaneity due to how busy she keeps herself.
It was while she was attending university that she met Elizabeth Cotterill, an adoptee originally from Sudan, studying for her M.A. in Intercultural Communication. Their similar outlooks and work ethic and complementary personalities led to a fast friendship; and proved a sorely needed boon when homesickness struck Leila particularly hard. Throughout their education, their friendship solidified and grew into a strong partnership. However, Leila was determined to return to the United States to be closer to her family, and so they parted ways once their education was complete.
Leila returned to Boston, sharing a flat with her sister while she sought her teaching certificate, which would allow her to work as a librarian at a college library. But after spending a year apart, (during which time Leila not only received her certificate but a job at Cambridge University) Lizzy decided that she would be happier moving to the states to be with Leila. She reached out to Leila—who was utterly overjoyed at this news. Within a couple months they worked out all the logistics and Lizzy was in the States, by Leila's side again. They lived together for a year before deciding to get married.
